What Is Carob?

Carob is a low-fat, caffeine-free, and theobromine-free alternative to chocolate. It looks and tastes similar to chocolate, but unlike cocoa, it has a naturally sweet taste.

Carob is also rich in minerals, including calcium, iron, magnesium, and potassium, and has traditionally been used to support digestive and cardiovascular health.

Why You’ll Love This Spiced Carob Latte

There are so many reasons why you’ll love this carob latte. Let’s look at just a few:

Delicious Chocolate Cinnamon Flavour

Believe me when I tell you that you won’t miss the cocoa in this cozy latte! Cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg—warming spices we crave during cold seasons—blend into a creamy, chocolatey base. I personally love the pairing of chocolate and cinnamon; it reminds me of a warm churro dipped in hot chocolate. It’s hard to resist.

Spiced Carob Latte

Caffeine-Free

If you’re not sensitive to caffeine, you may not even notice it in a cup of hot chocolate. But if you are, this spiced carob latte is likely a much better choice. A typical 12-oz hot chocolate contains roughly 5–25 mg of caffeine, depending on whether it’s made from an instant mix, prepared at home, or café-style. On the lower end, that amount may not cause issues; on the higher end, it can lead to headaches, jitters, or difficulty falling asleep for those who are sensitive.

Cocoa also contains theobromine, a naturally occurring compound similar to caffeine. While it’s a milder stimulant, its effects tend to last longer and can still trigger headaches or sleep disturbances in some people.

Carob, on the other hand, is naturally free of both caffeine and theobromine, making it a worry-free alternative that sensitive individuals can enjoy any time of day.

Dairy-Free & Vegan

If you’re vegan or avoiding dairy, you’ll love that this creamy carob latte is made with oat milk. Oat milk is an excellent substitute for dairy milk because of its creamy texture, and it’s mild enough to take on the flavour of whatever you add to it. This makes it a great option for those with allergies and sensitivities.

Naturally Sweetened

All too often, these warm, creamy drinks are loaded with sugar—tasty, but not great for your health. This spiced carob latte is naturally sweetened with carob and real maple syrup. Refined sugar spikes cortisol and weakens the immune system, which can lead to skin rashes, feelings of anxiety and depression, low energy, and illness. But sweeteners like unpasteurized honey, real maple syrup, and dates do not have the same effect. When enjoyed in moderation, they are a delicious way to provide important nutrients to the body.

Tools You May Need

  • Small saucepan
  • Small whisk
  • Frother – optional

Ingredients

  • Oat milk – or your favourite plant-based milk (I use this one)
  • Roasted carob powder
  • Maple syrup – honey or date syrup can be substituted
  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg
  • Ginger powder
  • Vanilla extract
  • Salt

How To Make Spiced Carob Latte

1. Warm the milk: In a small saucepan, heat the oat milk over medium-low until steaming (don’t boil).

2. Mix the dry ingredients: In a mug, whisk together carob powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and salt.

3. Create a paste: Add 2–3 tablespoons of the hot milk to the mug and whisk until smooth.

4. Combine: Pour in the rest of the steamed milk while whisking.

5. Sweeten: Add maple syrup and vanilla.

6. Serve hot: Top with a dusting of cinnamon or a sprinkle of carob. Optional: use a frother to create a foamy topping for your latte, or add a dollop of coconut whipped cream!

Notes

  • Milk choice: Oat or cashew milk creates the creamiest texture, while almond milk keeps it lighter. Coconut milk adds richness but will give a subtle coconut flavour.
  • Carob powder: Use roasted carob powder for the deepest, most chocolate-like flavour. Carob is naturally sweet, so start with less sweetener and adjust to taste.
  • Sweeteners: Maple syrup pairs well with carob, but honey or date syrup can also be used.
Spice level: Adjust cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg to suit your taste. A pinch of clove or cardamom adds extra warmth.
  • Caffeine-free: Carob contains no caffeine or theobromine, making this latte ideal for evenings, children, or those sensitive to stimulants.
  • Frothy version: For a café-style latte, blend all ingredients for 20–30 seconds before warming.

  • 1 ½ cups oat milk
  • 1 tbsp carob powder
  • 1 – 2 tsp maple syrup to taste
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon
  • tsp nutmeg
  • tsp ginger powder
  • 1 pinch salt
  • splash vanilla extract

Instructions

  • In a small saucepan, heat the oat milk over medium-low until steaming (don’t boil).
  • In a mug, whisk together carob powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and salt.

  • Optional: top latte with a little frothed oat milk.

Notes

  • Milk options: Unsweetened oat milk creates the creamiest latte, while almond milk keeps it lighter. Cashew milk is another great option for a naturally smooth texture.
