Vegan charcuterie boards are easy to put together and a beautiful way to serve finger foods

Why You’ll Love This Easy Vegan Charcuterie Board

Easy to Prepare

The older I get, the more I shy away from complicated or time-consuming recipes. I promise you that this charcuterie board couldn’t be easier to put together. All you need is a few staples like fruit, veggies, crackers/bread, vegan cheese, and whatever other items you would like to add. Be sure to add different coloured fruits and vegetables for added visual appeal!

Versatile

I have made a vegan charcuterie board in so many different ways—the possibilities are nearly endless. Only have one type of fruit? That’s okay! Add some crackers, a dip, nuts, and those cookies you made the other night. Catering to someone gluten-free? Add tortilla chips with some salsa, veggies, vegan cheese, and strawberries. Wow your guests with a simple arrangement of your choice (or whatever you have on hand).

Impressive-Looking Without A Lot of Effort

I regularly make a charcuterie board for my family as an easy lunch or breakfast while we’re homeschooling, so I forget how impressive it looks until guests come over. I often get wide-eyed looks and comments about how I didn’t need to go to so much trouble whenever I set out the charcuterie board. This makes me laugh knowing how little time and effort it actually took to put it together!

What to Use On a Vegan Charcuterie Board

The biggest difference between a vegan charcuterie board and a traditional one is the meat and the cheese. If you love these items, then absolutely include plant-based versions that can be just as tasty. Here are a few options you can use on your charcuterie board:

  • Vegan cheeses – feel free to use store-bought or homemade. I often use a cashew-based cheese spread like this one, but there are so many options.
  • Plant-based meats – again, so many options here. Plant-based deli meats, pepperoni, and even sausage. I use my own homemade summer sausage.
  • Crackers and bread – customize to your preferences. Gluten-free, rye, sourdough—whatever fits the occasion and tastes.
  • Fresh fruit – grapes and berries are always a sound choice, but feel free to use melon, orange slices, pears, olives (yes, technically a fruit!) or whatever you have on hand.
  • Dried fruit – my kids love dried mango, but you can also use dried apple, apricots, cranberries, and more.
  • Fresh veggies – cucumber, carrot sticks, celery, radish, and broccoli have all worked well for me. Again, use what you like!
  • Nuts and/or seeds – I regularly use pistachios, almonds, macadamias, and pumpkin seeds as they’re always popular, but I can see pecans, walnuts, and sunflower seeds being just as good.
  • Olives and pickled vegetables – we love garlic-stuffed olives, but there are a variety to choose from. Pickles and pickled asparagus also fill out the board nicely. Again use your favourites!
  • Dips and spreads – no charcuterie board would be complete without something to dip your cracker in and spread on your bread. Hummus, jam, jalapeño jelly, salsa, vegan cream cheese all work very well here.
  • Something sweet – this can be dark chocolate, cookies, mini brownies or squares–whatever your sweet tooth desires! I have used my No Bake Energy Balls, Saskatoon Berry Scones, and chopped up granola bars. Be creative!

How to Arrange a Vegan Charcuterie Board

This is the fun part! You can choose to arrange the breads and crackers together, cheeses and veggie meats together, nuts and seeds together, fruits and veggies together–you get the idea! Or you can just place everything where it looks the most visually appealing! Certain colour combinations look better, so take that into consideration.

Tips for Making Your Vegan Charcuterie Board Beautiful

The secret to a beautiful charcuterie board isn’t perfection; it’s variety. A combination of different colours, textures, shapes, and heights will make your board look beautiful and inviting.

Start with the larger items. Place bowls of dips, spreads, olives, or other small foods on the board first. These create a starting point for arranging everything else.

Create colour variety. Use a mix of colourful fruits and vegetables alongside olives, nuts, crackers, and vegan cheeses. Berries, grapes, citrus, tomatoes, and fresh herbs can add beautiful pops of colour.

Vary the shapes and textures. Don’t arrange everything in neat rows. Fan out crackers, fold or roll plant-based meats, pile nuts into small clusters, and arrange fruit in little groups. Mixing shapes makes the board feel more natural and abundant.

Fill in the empty spaces. Once the larger ingredients are arranged, use smaller foods like nuts, berries, dried fruit, seeds, or olives to fill any gaps. This is one of the easiest ways to make your board look full and generous.

Add height. Small bowls, stacked crackers, folded foods, and little piles of fruit can create different levels throughout the board. This keeps the board from looking flat.

Group similar foods together. Rather than spreading every ingredient evenly across the board, create small clusters. Grouping foods makes each ingredient easy to identify while giving the board a more organized appearance.

Add a few fresh finishing touches. Fresh rosemary, basil, mint, or other herbs can add colour and make the board feel extra special. You can also add edible flowers when appropriate.

Don’t overthink it. A charcuterie board should feel relaxed and plentiful. Don’t spend too much time arranging–add items where they fit naturally and the board will come together nicely.

Make-Ahead Tips

One of the best things about a vegan charcuterie board is that much of the preparation can be done ahead of time. This makes it an especially easy option when you’re entertaining or preparing for a special occasion.

Prepare the ingredients ahead of time. Wash and thoroughly dry fresh fruit and vegetables, slice any firm vegetables or fruit, and portion out nuts, olives, dried fruit, and other toppings. Store everything separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator or pantry, depending on the ingredient.

Prepare dips and spreads in advance. Hummus, vegan cheese spreads, tapenade, and other dips can usually be made a day or two ahead. Keep them refrigerated until you’re ready to assemble the board.

Assemble shortly before serving. For the freshest appearance, arrange the board an hour or less before serving. Keep perishable ingredients refrigerated until as close to serving time as possible.

Keep crackers and bread separate until serving. Add these at the last minute so they stay crisp and don’t absorb moisture from fruit, vegetables, or dips.

Cover and refrigerate when necessary. If you’ve assembled the board ahead of time, cover it loosely with plastic wrap or a reusable food cover and refrigerate it. Take it out about 20–30 minutes before serving so the flavours can come to room temperature.

With a little preparation ahead of time, your vegan charcuterie board can be assembled quickly when your guests arrive, leaving you more time to enjoy the gathering.
